Fall Women’s Retreat at PLCBC

The Fall Women’s Retreat at Portage Lake Covenant Bible Camp (PLCBC) proved to be another beautiful autumn weekend filled with joy, connection, and spiritual growth. Registration for approximately 80 women from across Michigan kicked off on Friday afternoon, setting the stage for an exciting weekend. Anticipation was high for the “fancy” dinner that awaited attendees, and it certainly did not disappoint.

The camp had prepared a delectable meal, but nothing could have prepared us for the delightful surprise of seeing the male staff dressed up and ready to serve! Their polished appearance added an unexpected touch of elegance to our dining experience. Each table was adorned with pretty tablecloths, and warm bread with butter greeted us as we arrived. Our dressed-up “wait staff” soon began serving plated meals of butter chicken paired with broccoli and rice—truly a treat to be served so well. The dinner concluded on a high note with a delicious cheesecake topped with cherries, leaving everyone satisfied.

Following dinner, we stayed in the dining hall for a short time of worship led by Carly, whose amazing vocals and guitar playing set a beautiful tone for the evening. As night fell, participants enjoyed campfires and games—a beautiful start to what promised to be an enriching retreat.

Saturday began with a hearty breakfast followed by worship in the newly sided red chapel. Against a stunning blue-sky backdrop, the red chapel looked gorgeous! Carly once again led uplifting, worshipful songs with her gorgeous voice accompanied by the staff band. Although our scheduled speaker fell ill unexpectedly and joined us via Zoom, her presence was still felt through her inspiring message.

After chapel, attendees had several breakout session options led by camp staff and volunteers—ranging from worship songs by the lake to spiritual direction sessions and a Q&A panel—providing thoughtful choices that catered to diverse interests.

Lunchtime brought another wonderful spread prepared by Patty—the talented camp cook—featuring various sandwich options paired with fresh salad and delectable cookies. After lunch came free time where participants could choose from activities like planned Christmas crafts, outdoor adventures such as the high ropes course or crate stacking in the gyn; some even ventured into town for shopping or enjoyed leisure time by the picturesque lake.

Dinner was scheduled early to accommodate an action-packed evening of activities including chapel services followed by square dancing in the gym as well as more games and campfires later in the night.

Though I had to leave early Sunday morning before experiencing another delightful breakfast or communion during the Sunday worship service, I am sure the conclusion was undoubtedly a fulfilling retreat for all who attended—a perfect blend of community connection, spiritual growth, and seasonal celebration at PLCBC.
