Fall Pastors’ and Spouse Retreat Recap

The Fall Pastors’ and Spouse Retreat at the Maumee Bay Conference Center in Oregon, OH, provided an enriching experience characterized by reconnections, fellowship, worship, and learning. This year, we were honored to have Dr. Gary Burge as our esteemed speaker. His insights into the Apostle Paul’s message to the Philippians illuminated the complexities faced by early Christians in a predominantly “Romanized” society where power and dominance were strived for and humility was looked down upon. Dr. Burge articulated how the concept of a humble servant as their savior would have posed significant challenges for many within that cultural context. Additionally, his sessions on the Middle East were particularly enriching, drawing from his extensive experiences and studies in the region.

The retreat was enhanced by extraordinarily beautiful weather which allowed participants to engage in much-needed outdoor activities. Shared mealtimes fostered wonderful reconnections with old friends and colleagues while also providing opportunities to meet new acquaintances. A distinctive aspect of being part of the Covenant denomination is the frequent discovery of mutual connections among attendees.

Evening sessions commenced with engaging icebreaker games followed by an exciting round of “Family Feud.” Jalen Seawright led worship with contemplative songs that set a reflective tone for our gatherings. Dr. Burge’s discussions on Paul’s letter to the Philippians prompted thoughtful dialogue among participants; he encouraged attendees to ponder several questions at their tables before opening up for further discussion.

The GLC Ministerium and the GLC staff hope all participants thoroughly enjoyed this year’s retreat experience. We eagerly anticipate gathering again next year alongside both returning faces and newcomers alike!
